Tegbe made the remark on Wednesday in Abuja while speaking at the commissioning of a 3-megawatt solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja.

According to the minister, he has received feedback from electricity consumers following improvements in supply in some parts of Nigeria.

He said some locations that previously experienced prolonged power outages were now receiving significantly longer periods of electricity supply.

“Places that didn’t have light at all for three months are now having 18 hours light,” Tegbe said.

He added that some consumers had jokingly asked him to slow down because their freezers were now continuously freezing their food.

“That is what freezer is meant to do. Let it freeze the food that needs to be frozen,” the minister said.

Tegbe Promised Improved Electricity Supply

Tegbe said he had promised during his Senate screening that Nigerians would begin to notice improvements in electricity supply within three to six months.

He acknowledged, however, that significant challenges remain within the country’s electricity sector.

According to him, some electricity infrastructure currently in use in Nigeria is more than 40 years old.

“We’re systematically replacing them, phasing them out and bringing new ones,” he said.

The comments come as the Federal Government continues to pursue investments in generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure alongside renewable-energy projects.

He disclosed that three major transmission towers in Birnin Kebbi had been brought down by vandals.

According to Tegbe, the affected towers form part of infrastructure supplying electricity to Kebbi State and extending toward Niger Republic.

He said the vandals attacked the foundations of the towers before bringing them down and removing sections of the structures for sale as scrap.

The minister also said the project created 3,201 jobs during its implementation.

Tegbe said the Rural Electrification Agency would work with the university to address parts of the campus that still require improved lighting.
